3 Tips Improve Your Focus and Bottomline
We are all jugglers. It comes with the title
"Entrepreneur." And it sometimes feels like a badge of honor to be
doing lots of things at the same time.
1) Focus on One Thing at a Time
The counter intuitive secret to improved productivity, however, is to focus on one thing at a time. The difference between a laser that cuts through steel and normal light that can't penetrate paper - is the laser's light waves are all aligned and focused at the same point. Focus equals power.
Bruce Lee - every woman entrepreneur's favorite role model :-) - once said "The successful person is the average person with laser-like focus."
2) Clear The Deck
To focus, first you have to clear the clutter. Take things out of your head and put them onto paper. Take 3 minutes and write down all the things you need to do today, along with any notes. Put it aside. Now you can focus on the task in front of you.
It a great idea to always keep a notebook with you to record those great, fleeting ideas, letting you get back to the task at hand. Knowing that they are in writing allows your mind to let go of them and move on.
Make it a habit. Whether you're reading a great business book, having coffee with your friends, or out for a power walk, keep a small notebook and pen handy.
Boredom is the lack of focus. Whatever it is, whether working on an important task, watching a movie, or in a conversation, you only get bored when your attention is not on what you are doing.
Imagine counting a hundred stones. Boring, right? Now, imagine counting a hundred diamonds. Big difference! The task is the same - counting things - but the meaning and importance you assign to it is different. Make everything you do important enough to focus on fully. Very zen. And very powerful.
3) Take a Time Out
And then there is the time to focus on not working. We are humans, after all, not terminators. We do need time to rest and refresh. Start by unplugging the internet and shutting off your cell phone. You don't have to read and respond to every tweet right when it comes out - it'll be there when you are ready to get back to work.
